June 14th, 2020, Zhengzhou - In an effort to introduce and promote international education and demonstrate the methodologies of inquiry-based learning to the parents and the children, Sias International School of Zhengdong New District, Zhengzhou (“Sias International School”) hosted a 2-session event with the generous help from International Schools Services (ISS), and provided an opportunity to experience international education first hand. Executives from the ISS Asia-Pacific including Vice President Mr. Greg Smith, Senior Executive Leadership Mr. Robert Stearns, Director of School Development Ms. Carlene Hamley, and Director of Business and Finance Mr. Brent Wang attended this event as guest speakers. The Chairman of Sias International School, Dr. Shawn Chen, the Executive Director of Sias International School, Mr. Wayne Wang, and the Founding Head of Sias International School Ms. Elizabeth Martinez attended and participated in the event.
The Founding Head and the Sias team first greeted the parents and the children attending the event, introducing Sias International School, the founding faculty and the founding operations staff. Ms. Martinez acknowledged their efforts leading up to the beginning of the inaugural school year.
Mr. Greg Smith then introduced the expert delegation and the ISS, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting international school startups. With over 60 years of history, 500+ partner schools and thousands of educators worldwide, ISS supports international schools on a global scale, providing teaching and learning resources, recruiting quality and experienced educators, providing career planning and professional development for faculties, assisting schools with finance and accounting and etc.
Mr. Robert Stearns and Ms. Carlene Hamley then took over and conducted a series of workshops showcasing the making of high-quality international education. Ms. Hamley proposed a few suggestions for effective parenting as they play an equally crucial role in education as school teachers, and Ms. Hamley recommended that parents should interact more with the children, encourage them and be there as they grow up. Mr. Robert Stearns then delivered the parents and the children a demonstration of inquiry-based learning, a core concept of international education. Through exploring the factors affecting the flight of a paper airplane on their own, tweaking and modifying their designs themselves and documenting the experiments, the parents and the children were able to experience inquiry-based learning first-hand and demonstrated tremendous enthusiasm during the process.
At the end of the event was a seminar specifically for parents who have registered for the Fall 2020 Semester, an opportunity for parents to discuss the development and the future of Sias International School face to face with the ISS experts.
The Sias founding team would like to thank you for your passion and enthusiasm for international education, and we thank you for your continuous interest and support. In the next feature, we will have a detailed look at the ISS experts’ suggestions. See you next time!
